Angélique Nagovskaya
Artist Profile
Angélique Nagovskaya (b. 1998, Montreal, Canada). Lives and works in London.
Angélique Nagovskaya is a painter whose work draws on religious, philosophical and psychological traditions to address questions of existence and consciousness. Working mainly in oil on canvas, she paints anonymous figures and imagined landscapes that carry the symbolism of spiritual and mystical thought.
Her paintings are often large, typically between 120 x 150 cm and 185 x 120 cm, and are accompanied by drawings on paper of a similar scale in charcoal, graphite, conté, coloured pencil and pastel. Some canvases combine oil with charcoal. The figures she depicts have no fixed identity and stand in for shared human experience, as in Faith Consuming Hope (2023) and the diptych man on horse, woman in cave (2023). A series begun in 2024, including where no wind wanders, develops maze-like landscapes of winding paths and openings, which she uses to represent the limits of human perception and the possibility of insight. Recent paintings such as Suspended in Motion, Embers of Change and Molten Rest (all 2025) take fire as their subject.
Nagovskaya completed a BFA in Fine Art and a BA in Art History at Cornell University in 2022, followed by an MA in Painting at the Royal College of Art, London, in 2023. In 2026 she joined the Turps Studio Programme in London. Her work has been shown in group exhibitions at Guts Gallery, BWG Gallery, the Gerald Moore Gallery and Twilight Contemporary in London. She won the Delphian Open Call in 2024 and received a YoungArts Creative Arts Grant in 2025, having earlier been a National YoungArts Foundation winner in the visual arts (2017). She held an undergraduate residency at the New York Academy of Art.
