Georgina Stone
Artist Profile
Georgina Stone (b. 1996, London). Lives and works in London.
Georgina Stone is an abstract painter whose large canvases are built from heavily layered, gestural surfaces in bright and often fluorescent colour. Each painting develops as an open process: an image is laid down, then worked over, scraped back and reworked until the surface records both its history and its revisions.
A painting often begins with a found image, such as a still from a vintage Disney film, a sticker or a piece of graffiti, which is gradually disrupted and fades as the work develops. Stone paints with her whole body and uses nails, sticks, pens and her hands as well as brushes. She combines oil with ink, watercolour, acrylic, pen, powder paint and glitter, and sometimes marks out an edge or corner of the canvas with a painted section of frame. Recurring references to childhood, femininity and mid-century animation sit alongside the language of abstract painting. Many works are close to two metres in height: Yes - they named her after the dawn (2024), in oil, ink, glitter and powder paint, measures 176 x 176 cm.
Stone completed a foundation at Camberwell College of Arts, graduated in Painting from the University of Brighton in 2018 and completed an MA in Painting at the Royal College of Art in 2024. In 2025 she presented the solo exhibition Intimate Worlds at Anthony Wilkinson, London. Group exhibitions include shows at Guts Gallery and Haricot Gallery, London, and Naranjo 141 Gallery, Mexico City, where she also held a residency in 2024. She was shortlisted for the Hari Art Prize and the Waverton Art Prize in 2024.
