Jen Hitchings

Artist Profile

Jen Hitchings (b. 1988, New Jersey, USA). Lives and works in Los Angeles.

Jen Hitchings paints imagined landscapes of mountains, waterfalls, rivers, suns and moons, organised around natural and bodily cycles: lunar, solar, seasonal, menstrual and botanical. Working mainly in oil, sometimes with acrylic, on canvas and panel, she draws on Japanese ukiyo-e prints, the Hudson River School and spiritualist imagery.

Her palettes are vivid and often close to monochrome, each keyed to a time of day, a temperature or a season. She applies paint by hand without tape or tools, staining it thinly, wiping it back or building it into contoured ridges of impasto. Compositions rely on symmetry, mirroring and repetition: twin suns, doubled peaks, and waterfalls falling in regular bands. No people appear. Some scenes are invented, while others are based on places of personal significance, from the American northeast where she grew up to the drought-affected valleys of southern California. Works range from small panels of 28 x 35.5 cm to canvases such as Mount Menses with Mourning Glories (2021), at 152.5 x 122 cm. She also makes watercolours and large outdoor murals.

Hitchings received a BFA in Painting and Drawing from Purchase College, State University of New York, in 2011. Her solo exhibitions include Cycles at Taymour Grahne Projects, London (2023), Seven Suns at Anat Ebgi, Los Angeles (2023), and Lunacy at Gaa Gallery, New York (2024). She has completed residencies at Studio Kura in Japan, the Vermont Studio Center and DNA in Provincetown, and received a New Works Grant from the Queens Council on the Arts in 2018. Between 2013 and 2020 she co-directed the Brooklyn galleries Associated and Transmitter.

Her work is held in the Beth Rudin DeWoody Collection, the Morgan Stanley Collection and the Intuit Corporate Collection.
